The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has upgraded its members' professional development platform, supplied by InfoBasis. Career Manager v. 2.0, based on InfoBasis' Enterprise Skills Infrastructure™ platform (InfoBasis ESI), will give members greater control over their professional advancement.

The IET has over 150,000 members internationally. "Feedback from members showed that they have been delighted using Career Manager," said IET Professional Development Manager Sandra Godman. "It also showed that they were interested in extending it. InfoBasis helped us understand how to implement these ideas in a user-friendly way that fitted existing workflows."

The new implementation, Career Manager v. 2.0, helps individuals work towards chartered engineer status in two ways. First, users can now build an archive of skills assessments, allowing them to demonstrate professional development over time. Second, the upgrade lets users share a view of their skills profile with invited 'guests'. These could be mentors, line managers, or the IET's own Professional Registration Advisors. These advisors can help members understand where to focus their development, and when they are ready to submit a good application for a higher grade of IET membership.

"Constantly improving what we offer our members is vital for the IET," said Godman. "We expect to keep extending Career Manager in light of user feedback. This upgrade is a great first step."

"The IET supports the engineering profession internationally," said Ashley Wheaton, CEO of InfoBasis, "and we're proud to play our part in that. As engineering grows increasingly sophisticated, so continual professional development becomes increasingly important. Career Manager will help today's engineers develop for the new century."
