New recruits to British American Tobacco (BAT) are to be introduced to the firm via online learning from the beginning of March.

Of the 700 headquarters staff affected by the decision, around 100 will be inducted initially using the online course.

The induction programme offers employees an interactive introduction to the workings of the tobacco multinational's headquarters in London. In addition, recently promoted staff and workers transferred from other parts of the organisation will also use the Ebc-developed e-learning resource.

Nicola Lloyd, assistant human resources manager at BAT, says the decision to move the induction online was prompted by a need for uniformity within the Globe House headquarters.
"A colleague of mine did some research into our existing practices and realised we needed to provide a more consistent induction programme," she explains.

The launch of the course over the company's intranet is also seen by BAT, makers of numerous cigarette brands including Lucky Strike, as a chance to familiarise employees with the intranet itself.

"Traditionally, the induction was carried out by showing a video on health and safety and talking about holidays and so on, but this can now be done via the intranet," explains Lloyd. "However, this does not mean we are taking away the human resources contact as we can now spend more time talking to staff about the more strategic work we do."
