Learning Technologies Show, London 30-31st January Successful but Schizophrenic The recent Learning Technologies conference and exhibition at Olympia on 30th & 31st January certainly maintained its recent reputation for a show with multiple personalities. It ranged from the academic, in the opening address by Professor Nigel Paine, Director of Science Year, to the deeply technical discussions with some IT vendors at their stands, to business strategy presentations on e-learning. 03/28/2006The Increasingly Mercurial Nature of Bespoke E-learning
Bespoke e-learning (or custom e-learning if you are west of the Atlantic Ocean), historically seems to have been the most stable of all the sectors of the e-learning market. Or so I thought anyway until too many of corporate research discussions indicated otherwise! Following some deeper research with a group of leading corporate e-learning consumers, and some quite fundamental cracks have started to appear in this relatively cosy story.

08/31/2005A new blog from David Wilson, looking at corporate learning and e-learning issues and trends
I've been asked many times why I don't run an ongoing blog of thoughts regarding the corporate learning and e-learning market, but have never quite got around to it. Partly this has been a factor of normal "i'm too busy" to do something else, partly it's also been a reflection of the number of articles and columns I've been writing for the training press (20-30+ a year on average). Anyway, I've now decided that the excuses are no longer valid ...

09/01/2005Learning Management Strategy; aligning learning to business strategy
I am finding that one of the topics I keep coming back to when discussing how corporate learning needs to change is the need for a coherent view of learning management strategy; how we structure and manage learning, and the linkages we make to the business and other people related concepts such as performance management, capabilities and learning.

10/24/2005E-learning is NOT Knowledge Management
I just read an interesting article by Verna Allee (www.vernaallee.com) called E-learning is NOT Knowledge Management. Originally, published in 2000 and recently posted on NetDimensions Blog, the article slams the e-learning industry and suppliers for a lack of understanding of Knowledge Management, a generally valid view, but one which I think needs to be countered as well.

10/31/2005Can 'blended learning' be redeemed?
I've just read an interesting paper on blended learning in the academic journal, E-learning, by Martin Oliver and Keith Trigwell. The paper focuses on a, maybe unsurprisingly, an academic analysis of blended learning, and discussion of the potential for its redemption. This of course immediately highlights the starting premise of the authors that 'blended learning is, in reality, a worthless term that needs redeeming.

02/06/2002European Corporate Business Skills Training Market - IDC summary
An IDC survey reports that the recent economic slowdown has not had a major impact on the business skills training market in Europe. They estimate the market is still growing at a 5-year compound annual growth rate of 14.9%, with revenue growing to over $13 billion by 2006. The current slowdown is seen only as a temporary blip in growth, and IDC expect that 2003 will see a return to normality in Europe. Training is still perceived as a time-consuming cost centre by many organisations, however.
